After helping to defeat a Catholic plot to oust Queen Elizabeth I from the throne, the Honourable John Melford is given the title and estate of one of those traitors. Being the youngest son of an Earl, he has become used to having nothing of his own, but now he suddenly has something to offer a bride. But before he can leave London to inspect his new estate, he has a visit from Lady Geraldine, the former betrothed of his late brother, Malcolm. She gives him love letters to Malcolm from a peasant woman which she has kept since his death four years ago. Instead of going to his new estate, John needs to find the peasant, Heather, and ensure her safety. Finding her in dire straits, he takes Heather and her sons to his new estate where they live happily for most of the summer. But their interlude is threatened when the Queen summons John to court to meet a lady she has chosen to be his bride. He loves Heather, but he knows he will never be allowed to marry a peasant. He will lose everything if he refuses the marriage the Queen has decided upon, but more importantly his brothers might also lose everything. There seems no solution to his dilemma. Will he give up the woman he loves to save his brothers?
