This book is part of a series of 7 volumes that can be read individually in any order. Highly Autobiographical, the first volume recounts the experiences of the Narrator while he is growing up, learning about art, participating in society, and falling in love. Despite initially being rejected by a number of publishers Swann's Way, Proust eventually arranged with the publisher Grasset to pay the cost of publication himself. When published it was advertised as the first of a three-volume novel. After the success of the book one of the people who rejected his book said: "For several days I have been unable to put your book down. The rejection of this book will remain the most serious mistake ever made by the NRF and, since I bear the shame of being very much responsible for it, one of the most stinging and remorseful regrets of my life"
