“Warning: Review does contain spoilers, but I will notify you before I start discussing the events in this book. The first part of this review is my overall opinion, and therefore will not contain spoilers.

Alright, let's talk about my overall thoughts on this book! (NO SPOILERS)

I'd like to first say that if you are interested in reading this book, I HIGHLY recommend going into it without knowing what it's about. I had no idea what this book dealt with, and if I had, I would've been disappointed because this book would not have had the same affect on me that it did. All you need to know is that this is a truly emotional story that deals with so many hard truths. This book will make you laugh, smile, cry, and feel quite a rollercoaster of emotions.

I'd also like to start by complimenting Colleen Hoover on her amazing ability to have me hooked on the first page. First of all, her dedication page was so thought-provoking. I've never been touched by the dedication page like I was for this book. The first sentence also had me intrigued from the beginning.

Colleen has such a fantastic writing style. This was my first Colleen Hoover book, but y0u can definitely be sure it won't be my last. The way she writes just completely captivated me, and I was astounded by it. She was able to take a story I didn't think I'd be able to relate to and make me feel all these feelings I didn't think I'd have. Whenever Lily, the main character, got mad, I got mad. Whenever she was sad, I was sad. This book touched me so deeply because I felt like I was dealing with everything Lily was right along with her.

This was such a quotable book. I found myself writing down multiple quotes throughout this story because they are just so many true concepts found in Colleen's writing. I am going to share a few of them with you. Don't worry, none contain spoilers:

"I feel like everyone fakes who they really are, when deep down we're all equal amounts of screwed up. Some of us are just better at hiding it than others."

"There is no such thing as bad people. We're all just people who sometimes do bad things."

"All humans make mistakes. What determines a person's character aren't the mistakes we make. It's how we take those mistakes and turn them into lessons rather than excuses."

"I hope you defy the odds of most dreams and actually accomplish yours."

Even though this book was definitely sad at times, it had a perfect amount of humor in it, too. I found myself laughing out loud on multiple occasions. I really love those authors who add some humor to lighten up a more serious story.

There are many moments during this story where you will need to take a moment and step away from the book. I completely binge read this entire book in one night, but for like 100 straight pages I couldn't take my hand away from my mouth. So much happens, and one thing after another will blow you away. I highly recommend reading this with a box of tissues and an inhaler, cause I'm pretty sure I stopped breathing multiple times. Haha.

This book will definitely make you cry, but please don't let that stop you from reading it. This story deals with a very hard, but important topic that I believe everyone should read about. It was my first time reading about it, and I'm really glad I did. And once you finish this book, you definitely need to read the note from the author at the end, because that brought on a whole new wave of tears for me.

The moment of this book that completely blew me away was the moment when I realized what the title meant. I was waiting for it to make since for the whole entire book, and when it finally did, it broke me inside.

I honestly don't know what other reasons you need to read this book because it was that incredible. I definitely recommend it to anyone and everyone. Do yourself a favor, and read this book.

So, now it's time for the spoiler/discussion part of this review. If you have not read this book, I definitely advise that you leave now and come back after you've read it, because you will be spoiled.

SPOILERS BELOW

So let's start by discussing certain characters.

Lily: Lily was such an amazing character to read about. I loved her personality and spirit. I loved the fact that her last name was Bloom, and that she wanted to own a flower shop. I was heartbroken by Lily and Atlas's story, but I loved reading about it at the same time. I thought the whole "letters to Ellen" thing was so cute. Later in the story, I became so scared for Lily. I didn't want her to have to go through what her mother had gone through, but then of course, she got pregnant. That really surprised me, and even though it made things really complicated, I was happy for her. I was so proud of Lily for the decision she made in the end to break it off with Ryle.

Ryle: In the beginning, I absolutely adored Ryle. I thought it was so funny when he was at Allysa's party and he just picked up Lily and took her to her room. Ryle was such a funny character, and I did love following his story even though it was a tragic one. It broke my heart the first time Ryle hit Lily, cause from that moment I knew he was going to end up being abusive. He wasn't as severe as Lily's father, but just the fact that he was similar to him was just awful. I was honestly mad at Lily when she kept forgiving him. Ryle's story about accidentally killing his little brother also broke me. That was so incredibly sad, yet it still was not an excuse for his behavior. Ryle was like a drug for Lily, and he was a drug for me too. At one part in the book Lily said, "Sometimes an unexpected wave comes along, sucks you up and refuses to spit you back out. Ryle is my unexpected tidal wave, and right now I'm skimming the beautiful surface." I wanted so badly for Ryle to fix what he had done, but I knew it wasn't possible. Even though things did end kind of rough between Ryle and Lily, they did not end as badly as I expected. I still loved Ryle in the end, and I was truly sad that it did not work out.

Atlas: After the very first time Ryle hit Lily, I immediately wanted her to break it off and go be with Atlas. I was surprised when he showed up in the story, but I was so happy at the same time. I loved the fact that Atlas knew Lily was in potential trouble from being with Atlas, and that he did everything he could to protect her. It broke my heart when we found out that Atlas was possibly going to kill himself, and when Lily's dad beat him and sent him to the hospital.

I also loved the "naked truth" thing with Ryle, and the "just keep swimming" thing with Atlas.

Allysa was such an amazing character, too. I loved her so much.I was so happy when she announced that she was going to be pregnant. But as the book progressed, I was scared that the things going on between Ryle and Lily were going to mess up Lily's relationship with Allysa. Allysa was literally the perfect example of what a true best friend looks like.

Overall, this book just completely blew me away, and I'm so glad I read it. Huge thanks to SocialBookCo for sending it to me!”
