“This fifth book in the Throne of Glass series following a renowned assassin who turns out to be... a lot more. That really doesn't do it justice, but I'm trying not to spoil yet! This is one of those series that's grown on me as it's progressed, mainly because since the first two books the world and plot have grown to be so much bigger and richer than I ever expected.
WARNING, there will be spoilers for the previous books from hereon in!
Aelin has already been stabbed in the back, lost friends and loved ones and the threat of war is imminent. I knew coming into this latest instalment that it would be fraught with more of the same; that it would be packed with more of those twists and backstabbing that I enjoy (I hate to feel too safe with the loyalties - and lives - of characters) so I was looking forward to being kept on my toes.
Aelin is still totally kickass, strong and extremely clever. I've heard someone describe her as a 'master manipulator' and that's the most accurate description. She knows what she's doing and has everything planned out, but keeps it all a secret so we as readers have to just watch it all play out in its perfect synchronicity.
I've loved Aelin as a character from the beginning, though in this book I think I enjoyed the supporting characters more. Aedion in particular stood out for me, bringing some sass and homour that I really needed. While I would say there's a good balance between action, adventure, romance and humour, this series has shouted romance fairly loudly on a few occasions, and anyone who knows me will know that romance is not my thing. I do like how the relationships are going though, and even had a surprise or two on that front. I adore Manon, which isn't a popular opinion but I really see her growth and I enjoyed her POV. There's a few others too; I've really enjoyed the world and characters growing so vastly over the past few books - this series really is unrecognisable when you compare the first two books to the rest, which is why it's been such a grower on me.
Thought I didn't feel the connection to Aelin as much in this book, with my love going to some of the other emerging characters, what happened to her really got the feels going. I really felt for her, but again it's a great example of her strength. I loved the ambiguity of what might or might not happen to her going forward, it really is 50/50 going in to this next book. Pitched as a six book series, Maas only has ONE more book left to tie up all those loose ends, and I'm worried for Aelin, but also excited. I like nothing more than some main characters being killed off unexpectedly, so I'll be waiting to see her fate - and everyone else's!”
