Kell is one of the last Travelers—rare magicians who choose a parallel universe to visit.
Grey London is dirty, boring, lacks magic, ruled by mad King George. Red London is where life and magic are revered, and the Maresh Dynasty presides over a flourishing empire. White London is ruled by whoever has murdered their way to the throne. People fight to control magic, and the magic fights back, draining the city to its very bones. Once there was Black London - but no one speaks of that now.
Officially, Kell is the Red Traveler, personal ambassador and adopted Prince of Red London, carrying the monthly correspondences between royals of each London. Unofficially, Kell smuggles for those willing to pay for even a glimpse of a world they’ll never see. This dangerous hobby sets him up for accidental treason. Fleeing into Grey London, Kell runs afoul of Delilah Bard, a cut-purse with lofty aspirations. She robs him, saves him from a dangerous enemy, then forces him to another world for her 'proper adventure'.
But perilous magic is afoot, and treachery lurks at every turn. To save all of the worlds, Kell and Lila will first need to stay alive — trickier than they hoped.

I think A Darker Shade of Magic is such an amazing book. I love how this book is so full of magic. As soon as I read that they could travel through different Londons, I was in. Magic was everything in this book, and I loved how hungry the characters were for magic... for power. I think that was wonderful, because we always read about characters being hungry for power, but not for both. Victoria created a wonderful world in this book, and oh my God, how amazing and brilliant it is
Delilah Bard is absolutely one of my favorite female characters ever. She isn't afraid of anyway, and she is so full of energy. She loves adventures, she loves feeling free. I love how brave she is. Oh my God, have I said how much I love her enough? I really, really love her. I want to be her.
"I'd rather die on an adventure than live standing still."
Kell is an amazing character, too. Both were so charming, and even though they didn't say it, they care about each other. I really enjoyed having the chance to read about their adventures, without any type of romance, because yeah romance is good but you don't have to introduce romance in the first book or in the first chapter. Rhy is such an amazing character, too. I hope we get the chance to read more about him in the second book because I really love him. To be honest, I cannot wait to read more about these three characters because I know there are a lot of backstory that we still don't know.
As I mentioned, this whole new world was amazing. I would love to have the chance to travel through different types of Londons. I haven't go to London, but I cannot wait to go. There are different Londons, but you don't get confused. Every London has their own different characteristics, and that helps you to know "oh, so I'm in Red London". I can't say I have a favorite London because every single one of them has a different thing that I like.
The whole plot is amazing, and having magic as a living thing is such a wonderful new thing. The story is so full with plot twists, and you won't be able to stop reading. I swear. I was so glad when Kell and Lila's path entwined because they are the most amazing and fantastic duo ever. Their different personalities make this story even a better one.
"Do you know what makes you weak?" said Holland. "You've never had to be strong. You've never had to try. You've never had to fight. And you've certainly never had to fight for your life."
This is the first book I read by Victoria Schwab and I'm so glad I did. She has a magical writing, and you get so captivated since you read the first sentence. I cannot wait to read the second installment of this wonderful trilogy because I'm pretty sure it would be even more good than the first book.
"As Travars," he said. Travel.”
